John Wardle

When embarking on the request to provide drawings as extracurricular pursuits I had to consider carefully  the nature of my drawing processes as well as my utilisation of spare time. My drawings are rather scruffy compositions drawn in haste often in conversation with others or with notes all over to better convey what the drawing does not.

The beach house for our family, which is the subject of these drawings, resulted from around 20 such overlayed sheets.

Composition one This brick with its torn and scalloped surface has been made by Klynton Krause. The first  drawing, of lead and charcoal, illustrates this variance within the rhythm of a broad surface of a brick wall . The second drawing of a single brick was produced with a large lump of charcoal.

Composition two I have redrawn the last of many iterative sketches of our beach house now under construction. Good friend Simon Lloyd fashioned this drawing stick from bamboo to take a 6B pencil. Held in something like a golf putter grip with both hands steering the pencil I managed to execute this on the 5th attempt. As I do not think I’ll do this again I’ve mounted the bamboo stick with the work.
